Bruce worries,

"Together, they constitute a diptych of damnation of the man.
Granted, one might seek safety in that lit crit theory of a firewall
separating man and work, but I'm not so sure how I'll feel the next time I
 pick up a Salinger story."

Although that wall is certainly in place for me, it isn't even really
necessary in this case. Salinger's "sins," even as chronicled in the two
recent projects by others, are lightweight ones compared to some of my
favorite writers. In fact, I 'm not sure there's a "Major Modernist" favorite
of mine out there, old EH and Joyce included, with whom I would have wanted
to be buddies -- or even spend any serious amount of leisure time.

But then again, I read and love Celine. And if you can love Celine's work
while knowing what a complete and utter misanthrope and even downright evil
man he was (and you have to know, since he never hid it -- especially in his
pamphleteering and diaries and interviews), then Salinger is no problem at
all.

And of course, there's Sade...

Ah well.

Just a thought,
