i'd say you got a great deal if i understand you
correctly: trading your copy of alsen's book for the
banned hamilton. i've spouted off against alsen
before, but i mean here that the original hamilton
book sells for four figures on abe.com

are you saying that the original hamilton does NOT
contain a great deal of quoted salinger material? as
i understoood the fuss, hamilton quoted gobs of
salinger text from his letters housed in institutions.
and that was salinger's beef. hamilton then had to
rewrite, paraphrase, the letter's content, and still
ole jd wasn't satisfied. 'the expressive heart' of
the letters was still being snatched, and that belongs
to the letter writer. and that leads us to the book we
have available.

of course when all this was happening back in '86/'87,
the media printed some text of the letters; that
malicious sketch of charlie chaplin on his honeymoon
with oona was the media' favorite as i recall.
