Kim, re the Hamiton book, frankly, I wasn't looking at in monetary terms.
Nor was the generous sharer who didn't have to pay for it. Various members
of this list have been variosly generous in sharing e-copies, photocopies
etc. and only the international mailing cost becomes a factor. I actually
even threw in a photocopy of the rather tangential Kurien book as well.

As I understand, and as Hamilton records in the book, the press quoted far
more freely than he had and that all of those letters had to be individually
copyrighted and thus came into public domain in as much as anybody could get
a copy for personal use, for a small fee. Of course, I am saying this from
an increasingly unreliable memory. Basically, to me, the later book is a far
better account, though the changes are minimal and there is nothing of any
signifcance that is not already in some report or the other.

Thanks for the ready link to the NYT review. My memory of it was entirely
flawed. But quite fair and generous, I now think. Looking back on my
thoughts of that time, I came across the lines: "Almost all the "serious"
critics- Warren French, John Updike et al, have been dismissive of Hapworth,
and Alsen Eberhard is perhaps the only one of note who has tried to
establish that it is better than generally supposed."

"Tried," perhaps being the operative word.

Sonny
