Typically in freshman composition and literature courses, there are so many in need of the same course, that classes are divided into sections of the course. The term "Section Man" was intended to point to the aspiring grad students who did not yet lead the course but who did most of the class teaching outside of the large lectures...sort of like being a sheep dog and the master teacher is the shepherd (and yes, the students are sheep!)... Although Lane Coutell typifies both a yalie and section man and probably fails to understand Franny's sense of spiritual seeking, and although Salinger has made it clear he's not fond of critics, I believe even critics and section persons are still readers and when we accept that beyond prejudices (for Or against) we can look at the reading strategies used to understand texts and enrich ourselves by learning about alternate ways texts unfold their truths.
