Typically in freshman composition and literature courses, there are so
many in need of the same course, that classes are divided into sections of
the course.  The term "Section Man" was intended to point to the aspiring
grad students who did not yet lead the course but who did most of the
class teaching outside of the large lectures...sort of like being a sheep
dog and the master teacher is the shepherd (and yes, the students are
sheep!)...

Although Lane Coutell typifies both a yalie and section man and probably
fails to understand Franny's sense of spiritual seeking, and although
Salinger has made it clear he's not fond of critics, I believe even
critics and section persons are still readers and when we accept that
beyond prejudices (for Or against) we can look at the reading strategies
used to understand texts and enrich ourselves by learning about alternate
ways texts unfold their truths.  Will
