I know -- I, ah, am totally illiterate about pop culture, and I saw lyrics
from one of her songs, liked what I saw, and went to the record store to
ask about this person I'd never heard of (assuming the guy at the counter
might not have heard of her, either). When I asked if he'd heard about
her, he looked at me as if I were from Mars, and tossed a disk from a pile
of about a zillion copies of "Jagged Little Pill," and that is how I
learned who Alanis M. was.

I guess it's right up there with saying, "Hey, did you know Paul McCartney
was in a band before Wings?"

Anyhow, I've grown to like the album a lot. I didn't know anything about
her "falling out of favor," but will definitely buy her next record,
whenever it comes along. I respect that kind of anger; I can't stand it
when people allow themselves to be mistreated (though we all seem to do it
at times), and would rather hear a singer engage in what Lou Reed once
called "rage, pain, anger, and hurt" than toss off a bit of fluff.

ObSalinger: I have no obligatory Salinger message to insert. Except that I
finally located a copy of the complete E.E. Cummings anthology at a price I
could afford.
