This makes me remember my Japanese class. When they don't have a word for
something, they use the foreigners' word. I know the French do this too.
The Japanese word for sandwich is "san-do-ee-chee," which is basically how
it is pronounced in the Japanese phonics.
Powdered milk is called mee-roo-koo. They'd never seen powdered milk when
the sailors arrived with it. They asked what is this and the sailors said,
"milk." mee-roo-koo was born.
It's been years, as I said, but that's how I remember things. I don't think
you can pronounce rye in Japanese phonics. It might be ra-ee.
