Wasn't part of Bernie's original question around "you" regarding formality?
That is, is Holden talking to a close friend, or a child, or is he using a
formal form of speaking, such as to a stranger or a respected authority? I
took some Japanese a long time ago and I remember there are such different
ways in how you say "you" depending on who the person is in relation to
you. At least the two forms of formal versus informal.

Did the Japanese translator use a formal "you" or an informal "you"? If
there are there even more distinctions than those two, which did he or she use?
