>If Franny is not pregnant, then why does Salinger go to all the trouble >to beat us over the head with the fact that they are having sex? If >there is another use for this information in this story, I would love to >hear that theory. Welp, I just finished reading F&Z last night for the second time, and this time the pregnancy theory crossed my mind a lot less often. I still haven't decided what I think about the matter but I'm leaning toward the not pregnant side. Anyway, the mention of Franny and Lane having sex is really very short, a coupla lines, and I think the reason for it (if you throw out the pregnancy theory) was to give us some insight into the character, Lane. Franny has just fainted and she's lying there on a couch in the restaurant office and people are running around trying to bring her smelling salts and crap and Lane says "bah, forget the football game, maybe I can sneak up to your room later tonight so we can get it on... it's been way too long". I think that tells us a lot about the young man... and I think that's the reason it was included in the story. P.S. Despite a few minor annoyances (like the one I just mentioned), did anyone else find themselves actually LIKING Lane? If I get a bunch of emphatic "NO"s I'll explain why I liked him. If not, you already understand. :) =============================================== David S -- david@cybermail.net -- http://www.biogate.com/david ===============================================
