Scottie, I think you are referring to Warren French's response to
Hollywood's version of UWIC...he called the film "a weepy." I have
deep respect for French as Salinger's best critic, and I know him
personally well enough to be just as respectful when it comes to
film. Readers of Letters to Salinger will be amused by one of
French's letters because he discusses his interest in films and even
offered to share his "stash" with Salinger when French spent summers
in Cornish. Anyway, what I'm trying to say is that I think French's
dismissal of the film has merit. I only saw it on TV once and I had a
hard time seeing very much of the Salinger story in the film. That
was 10 years ago so I guess I should hunt up a video and try again,
