Oh no, not at all ... although I would argue that a) we wouldn't care about either person if not for their work (hence the analogy I made to Christopher Marlowe) and b) I don't think the cult of Shakespeare's enigma is quite as intrinsic as is Salinger's. And true, we are the ones who keep such people's memories alive - but would we bother if they hadn't produced such quality work as they? That said, I don't think Shakespeare even knew he was a genius, which is one of the things I like best about him. There's nothing worse than a capital G Genius.
