Jennifer--

1. We should be here to discuss our commonalities and
differences ***with regard to JDS's works.*** If you
want to discuss other things with list members with
whom you become friends (which is cool, if/when it
happens, I'll admit!) you should feel obligated to do
it somewhere else, off list (on the phone, in a chat
room, at a pub...there are tons of places. Why
here?!). This is NOT a free for all! This is for JDS
discussion. To presume we all want to hear about all
of your views on Ashcroft and the FBI is just not
right. I additionally point you to the list's
"charter":

"This is a list for the discussion of the works of
J.D. Salinger. It
is intended for amateur readers, writers, scholars,
critics, and
The Rest of You Who Know Who You Are...

Feel free to introduce yourself,...This will help your
fellow subscribers get to know you and to hear
what interests you about J.D. Salinger's work...

..."Bananafish" exists to discuss Salinger's work..."

What is unclear about this? Maybe you should ask Tim
to change the charter to more reflect what you
consider to be the majority's views so new subscribers
know what they're getting into when they sign up?

2. I think something like 9/11 is a special case.
However, I still think that those discussions should
focus on friendships, emotions, "Are you OK?"s and
common ground and not on int'l politic views and such
(I'm not saying the politicking happened here, though,
I just can't remember). Recent discussions about the
FBI and Ashcroft and conspiracies are not at all
comparable to 9/11, though. Even then, though, you
should not assume that everyone in the world has the
same exact view about 9/11...

3. The only way your "whining women" (why just women,
I wonder?) comparison works is if the woman was
calling to complain about her daily Skydiving radio
program's whole-show off-topic discussion of Bill
Clinton's sexual prowess (e.g.). Or you could scold me
if I publicly objected to discussions about J. D.
Salinger on the bananafish list when I knew going in
what the topic was supposed to be. When I get
something I don't have reason to expect, I have a
right to voice my thoughts on the subject (and you are
free to reject them).
