Oh, wait, let me append. Politics SHOULD BE about everyone's welfare. But
it always, irrevocably, and inescapably IS about self-interest.

You're selfish in your politics as well, I am certain. But not by design.
You just understand political issues from your point of view, and as a result
probably imagine that what you think is best is really best for everyone. On
some level that may be true, but on another level -- a more specific level --
you would support policies and programs that other people would want cut in
favor of policies and programs they themselves want. Government money is
limited, so what you give to one program you take away from another.

What I favor is letting EVERYONE pursue their self interest through
government -- equal representation for all -- and having the government
adopting policies that serve the greatest possible good for the greatest
number of people. I think the best we can do is come up with an agenda
everyone can live with but no one completely likes.
