Oh my God, Will! I've just been scanning your web page, and down near the
bottom I found this reference to Yogi Berra which is undoubtedly the
'invisible worm' that will nip your rose-coloured view of the current
Yankees in the bud--if I'm not mixing my metaphors excessively; not to
mention my authorial allusions.... You and I can argue till the cows come
home about Mr. Berra's poetic potential. But even a dyed-in-the-lycra
Yankee fan will have to concede that George Steinbrenner is NOT Yogi Berra.
I couldn't cheer for a team owned by (and basically managed by)
Steinbrenner, any more than JDS, or even God Herself could!
Bring back the Boomer! Bring on the Bluejays!
OSO: One of my very favorite images from the UNcollected stories has Holden
dancing with Sally in the Wedgwood Room, taking long, slow sidesteps back
and forth, as though they were dancing over an open manhole....
