I may have mentioned that we have only gotten through a ten minute
sample, as these tapes don't get too much air time except on long
car trips (where they are a true blessing, believe me - we made it
to the Berkshires in three hours without realizing it by listening
to The Indian in the Cupboard (also very, very well done) - parents,
   take note <smile>).

My two main customers are young ladies ages 10 (going on 18) and
12 ("don't call me that in public!" age) who are thankfully not too
media-jaded and still appreciate just sitting and listening
to nothing more than a single voice reading. They are amused by the
New England accent (New Yawkas ourselves) and I believe they very
much want to continue, so I will give them the tapes, to be used
after homework, of course (while engaged in the interminable task
of cleaning their room and organizing their scrapbooks, etc., with a
little sibling-sitting thrown in). As for crying, I'm not sure they
   will, I don't anymore.

While we're being so homey, I might as well tell you about my lawn...
Actually, the little verse that follows *did* come to me during the lastest
round in the eternal suburban skirmish.

And what did *you* do on your summer vacation?

   all the best,
   Mattis

   Here I am
surrounded by the Lion's Teeth I did not sow,
yet which spring up to mock me
   with their obscenely yellow,
   (dare I say, fluffy?) manes

   No Jason, I,
and with no Circe to advise me
   I strike these humbling warriors
   with (must I tell?)
   a screwdriver

   No one wins
   this war without resort to
wholesale mayhem (so I console myself)
and I retreat to look up recipes
   for dandelion wine
