The gist of it is `Well, he was no artist [like me, it is implied] but as my Mum says, he knew his Rambo from his Rimbaud' Or words to that effect (: Camille>> Jonson's epitaph for Shakespeare--"he was not of an age, but for all time." Viewing this argument from the outside, it seems like the disagreement isn't necessarily with the facts, but with the degree to which certain facts are emphasized. From what I've heard of his personal letters and life, Shakespeare wrote plays until he made enough money to live comfortably, then quit. His personal correspondence wasn't so much about his art as it was about real estate and gold investments. But we know sooo little.
