i don't think beckett cared a fig what the critics
wrote and thought. whereas salinger seems to be very
thin skinned about it. supposedly mary mccarthy's
vicious review of 'franny and zooey' in 'harper's' was
especially hard to swallow. and, of course, after the
fairly generous praise of 'the catcher' and 'nine
stories', the critics didn't embrace the glass brood.
i believe it's been suggested that salinger withdrew
(?)--delayed indefinitely--the publication of
'hapworth' after the ny times book reviewer went on
the offensive against the glass family after it was
announced 'hapworth' was to be published in book
format.
